HomeMy WebLinkAboutHRC 2022-09-27 HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, September 27, 2022 – 7:00 p.m. I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Chair Glover. Members Present: Richard Glover, Denise Collins-Robison, Carmen Kennedy-Rogers, and LaShawn Thomas, Director of Government Affairs Not Present: Haitham Fakhouri, Becky Drzewicki II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda for the September 27, 2022 meeting was approved unanimously. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes for the July 19, 2022 meeting were approved unanimously. IV. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT a. Boards and Commissions Spirit of Service Celebration Breakfast: This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 (8:30 am) at the St. Mary Cultural Center. Attending from HRC - Denise Collins-Robison b. HRC Recruitment of New Members: If members know of community members interested in joining, contact Chair Glover; seeking 2 or more new members c. Corn Roast Recap: HRC members were present and engaging with community members during annual Corn Roast on Sunday, Sept. 18, at Bicentennial Park; Chair Glover, Denise Collins-Robison, and LaShawn Thomas shared reflections and insights d. Relationship Development Check In: Chair Glover shared purpose of relationship development; no specific updates shared VIII. Old Business a. Updates from our subcommittees i. Non-Discrimination Ordinance (NDO) HRC members attended City Council Meeting on ; NDO being placed into Committee of the Whole ii. Research & Data No updates. iii. Outreach & Communications No updates. iv. Racial Justice Forum Chair Glover shared that a forum possibly will be hosted at a Livonia Public Library in November; Chair Glover is connecting with Toni LaPorte, Director of Livonia Public Library to plan details. v. Education Carmen Kennedy-Rogers discussed the planning of the 5th annual HRC Student Video/ Short Essay Contest ● Denise Collins-Robison identified her relationships and connection to Livonia Public Schools Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion committee; This group is in discussion about a near future sponsorship of a student DEI project; serve as a strong connection to students in schools; Denise Collins-Robison will connect with group to learn about future plans ● This project could also align with the Livonia Youth Commission ● Need to determine new contact people at Clarenville High School - previous contacts left the school district ● After discussion, it was determined the contest information will be shared in November/December 2022; Due date for entries will be prior to MLK Day 2023 ● Discussion of how to attract more student participation – Need to determine if video will be submitted via TikTok (more attractive to young people); LaShawn Thomas will contact City law officials to determine if TikTok is permissible. ● Consider conducting two different contests: Video/Short Essay AND Essay; need to determine dollar amount; HRC needs to send official email to the Mayor Chair Glover - in contact in with Madonna and Schoolcraft to learn about the details of MLK event IX. New Business Mayor Brosnan would like for HRC to send a letter to the Livonia Chamber of Commerce thanking the Chamber for the “We Welcome Everyone” campaign. LaShawn Thomas will connect with HRC members about content of letter and to collect signatures. X. Audience Communication No Audience Present Meeting adjourned at 7:59 p.m. NEXT MEETING OF THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION IS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25TH AT 7:00 PM.
