MINUTES OF THE ELECTION COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF LIVONIA, MICHIGAN
A meeting of the Election Commission of the City of Livonia, Michigan, was
held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at the Livonia City Hall, 33000 Civic Center Drive, Livonia,
Michigan at 2:30 p.m., at which time and place the following members of said Commission
were present:
Present: Dennis Wright, Mayor
Paul Bernier, City Attorney
Susan Nash, City Clerk
Also Present: Lori Miller, Deputy City Clerk
Mike Slater, Director of Finance
Susan Nash assumed the duties as Chairperson of the Election
Commission.
Upon a motion by Commissioner Wright, supported by Commissioner
Bernier, and unanimously adopted, it was:
RESOLVED that the minutes of the Election Commission meeting held on
October 11, 2018 are hereby approved.
Upon a motion by Commissioner Bernier, supported by Commissioner
Wright, and unanimously adopted, it was:
RESOLVED that for the Tuesday, August 6, 2019 City Primary Election and
the November 5, 2019 City General Election, the following precincts will be
consolidated:

Chairperson Nash indicated she wanted to discuss the increasing costs of
running elections with the Commission and Mike Slater, Finance Director, and how to
prepare for future elections. With the recent adoption of Proposal 3 and “no reason”
absentee ballots, it is expected the number of absentee ballots issued will double in the
future. Further, Chairperson Nash indicated the City is very responsible and consolidates
precincts as much as possible and will look at the possibility of consolidating precincts
next year if the number of absentee ballots per precinct continues to increase.
Commissioner Bernier inquired why the School District does not allow us to
utilize the high school buildings and indicated using a large building to process multiple
precincts could help keep costs lower. Commissioner Nash indicated she had a
conversation earlier this year with the Schools and was informed the high schools will not
be available for the City to use as polling locations. Commissioner Nash explained with
same day voter registration and the issuance of absentee ballots, the way elections are
run, and the associated costs will continue to rise. In addition, new equipment was
required to be purchased last year to accommodate the higher volume of absentee ballots
which affected the increased expenditures in last year’s budget. Commissioner Nash
indicated Wayne County is now involved to assist local municipalities in their efforts to
minimize the costs of equipment and support for same on Election days.

Upon a motion by Commissioner Bernier, supported by Commissioner
Wright, and unanimously adopted, this meeting of the Election Commission of the City of
Livonia was adjourned at 3:00 p.m. on April 2, 2019.
