LIVONIA HISTORICAL COMMISSION
SEPTEMBER 20, 2017
VOTING MEETING MINUTES
The meeting was called to order on September 20, 2017 at the Alexander Blue House
at 6:35 p.m.
Present: Deanna Brown, Nancy Frye, Barbara Mansfield, Michael Marihugh, Stephanie
Miner, Patty Trojan
Also Present: Emily Tchorz
Absent: Gary Pritchard, Sandi Pritchard
The August 16, 2016 meeting minutes will be reviewed and approved in November.
Mary Cambridge presented the treasury report for July 2017 and August 2017 to be
placed on file.
Barbara Mansfield, Chairman, reported: The Flea Market set-up, sale, and clean-up
were a success and brought in $1,290 in item sales for the Livonia Historical Society
and $153 in water sales for the Livonia Historical Commission. Items that were not
deemed for sale in the spring were donated to the VFW for their garage sale. There
were close to 20 volunteers during the week to help with set-up. The Cemetery Walk
went well and had over 70 people in attendance. There were 41 people in attendance
for the LHS program on the DUR including 8 from Waldenwood Nursing Home. Barbara
has been making calls or tour guides and has noted that there are people who never
answer/respond to the calls who should be taken off the list. She will meet with
Maureen Casey and Emily Tchorz to revamp the list.
Commission’s reports of activities & participation since last meeting:
Mary Cambridge has attended the Cemetery Walk meetings, facilitated cleaning of the
Bungalow and worked the Flea Market. Gary Pritchard worked the Flea Market. Patty
Trojan worked the AMC Car Show, the Ice Cream Day and attended the 1st Annual
Corn Roast. Stephanie Miner attended Cemetery Meetings & the walk, worked the Flea
Market set-up and sale and has been working on the Guns n’ Gowns event. Sandi
Pritchard worked the Flea Market set-up & sale and attended Cemetery Meetings.
Nancy Frye worked the Flea Market and attended the 1st Annual Corn Roast. Deanna
Brown worked the Flea Market and attended the 1st Annual Corn Roast. Mike Marihugh
worked the Flea Market.
Emily Tchorz reported:
• Maintenance Update: We are still waiting on Brooks for the Blue House painting
on the south side and look at the plastic window covers protecting the stained-glass
windows in the Church. Bongero met with contractors regarding the railings on the Geer
Store and the Hill House. Nancy Frye gave Handyman Dave’s number to Emily so that
he may be contacted about replacing the rotten boards on the Bungalow porch and the
railings on the back as well as the loose window.
• 09/01 A motion was made to investigate the repair of the stained-glass windows
in the church. Motion made by Deanna Brown and seconded by Patty Trojan. Motion
approved.
• Cemetery Arch at the Livonia Center Cemetery: A purchase order has been
submitted.
• Rental Income to Date for 2017: For the Meeting House, we have brought in
$4,300 in rental fees. The Church has brought in $10,115.
• Nankin Mills Schoolhouse: Project manager Tony is out of the country. He has a
mason on board to do the blocks for the foundation and the materials should be
delivered soon with work starting shortly after that. It will take a few weeks to be
completed.
• Institute of Museum and Library Services Nomination: We were nominated by
David Trott. Emily is working on the necessary paperwork.
• Greenmead Clerk Posting: The posting went out to city employees that would do
a lateral slide into the department. If there is no interest, it will go out to the public.
• Experience the One Room School Brochures: Emily has created the brochures.
There is a $75 base fee for 25 students with an addition $3 cost for each additional
student. There is a rental on October 25th and 26th for a charter school.
• WiFi Expansion: It will cost roughly $1,000 to get WiFi at the Hinbern.
• Halloween Event: Maureen Casey is looking for set-up, event, and clean-up
volunteers. Decorating needs to be done the week of October 27th. The event begins at
5pm and ends at 7:30pm with the last group.
• Budget Status: There is currently $210,410.72 in the trust fund.
• Status of building cleaning / discoveries, accessioned items etc.: Discussion was
brought up about getting corporate sponsors for the buildings. Example: Ford for the
Ford built Nankin Mills School House. Each commissioner will take one or more of the
buildings and adopt it for review of its needs. Please see the attached list for building
assignments. Accessioning is being worked on by Danielle Lewon and Kathie Glynn.
They are working to figure out what we have and where it is. Nancy Frye would like to
see the Commission invest in Greenmead Banners for use at public events.
Commissioners agreed that this would be beneficial.
Past and Future Events:
1) August tours – August 13: S. Miner/ M. Cambridge
2) August 20 – AMC Car Show – Hinbern only open by P. Trojan / N. Frye who
noted that it was not necessary to have it open due to lack of interest in the gift shop.
a) August 27 – Ice Cream Day, D. Brown/ P. Trojan noted that people were upset
there were popsicles in place of ice cream.
b) September 3 – Labor Day weekend – no tours
c) September 11 – Flea Market went well despite the Blue House running out of
food for the public. It was noted that we should write down the weather and temp to
review to determine the amount of food to buy each session. We ran out of hot dogs at
1pm despite having purchased 400 hot dogs.
d) September 17 – Cemetery Walk at Clarenceville Cemetery & Livonia Corn Roast
(1st Annual) by the YMCA. This will be the last cemetery walk.
e) September 23-24 – Guns n’ Gowns Civil War Living History event with building
tours
f) September 23 – M. Marihugh/ R. Bakewell
g) September 24 – N. Klein / N. Frye
h) October 1 Hill House – The gift shop will not be open, but it is proposed to have
some sort of giveaway such as pens or tote bags.
Additional Business & Action Items:
• See the attached proposed 2018 Calendar for 2018 for activities/tours/events.
• Brainstorming for programs in 2018 – potential to do a joint program with the
Livonia Historic Preservation Commission in the form of a Road Rally to take the place
of the Cemetery Walk. The road rally could include places such as the first drive in
restaurant, the first church, first high school, original location of the Alexander Blue
House, etc...
o Candle Light Tour during Guns n’ Gowns
o Wedding Expo with vendors in the Blue House & Meeting House with the church
open for viewing.
• The window shades at the Hill House are in need of replacement. This could be
done by the Questers if they received a grant. Discussion indicated the wish to have the
Questers help repair the windows at the church instead.
• 09/02 A motion was made that the Historical Commission take care of the
window shades at the Hill House and request assistance from the Questers to help with
the repair of the stained-glass windows at the Church. Motion made by Patty Trojan and
seconded by Deanna Brown. Motion approved.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:42 p.m.
The next meeting will be October 18, 2017 at the Alexander Blue House at 6:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Stephanie Miner
