HomeMy WebLinkAboutTraffic Commission 2017-05-11 rd MINUTES OF THE 733 REGULAR MEETING LIVONIA TRAFFIC COMMISSION rd The 733 Regular meeting of the Livonia Traffic Commission was held in the third-floor conference room at City Hall on Thursday, May 11, 2017; it was called to order by Chairperson Jim Policelli at 7:30 p.m. PRESENT: Commissioners: Jim Policelli, Gordon Draper, John Katers, Gordon St. John, Joel Turbiak, Rebekah Farabaugh, Jim Keller; and Livonia Police Sergeant Brian Leigh. VISITORS: Kip Bonds, Carol Ann Strohmer, Barb Bauman - Livonia Hills Estates; Tiffany Starasinich and Denise Berthiaume. Agenda Item 1: The minutes of the April 13, 2017, meeting were reviewed. Commissioner Farabaugh offered a motion to approve minutes as written and with support from Commissioner Keller, it was approved by a 3 Aye, 3 Abstain vote that: 17-238 RESOLVED, the minutes of the April 13, 2017, meeting are approved as written. Agenda Item 2: Eight Mile and Haggerty and I-275 Intersections, section 6. Resident Kip Bonds came to the commission looking for suggestions of a traffic solution for the 8 Mile and Haggerty and I- 275 traffic intersections. The entire area is very congested and rush hour traffic makes it much worse. The request is simply to revisit the timing of the lights throughout the corridors. The commission requested that the City Engineer look into this matter further. Agenda Item 3: Woodring Street, section 15. Request for - signage. Resident Tiffany Starasinich is requesting a sign to remind drivers to slow down on residential streets. Her children, as well as many other residents children, are playing, but since their street has no sidewalks, she feels that it could benefit from a sign being placed. The commission, in consulting the MMUTCD manual, noted there is no such sign available for placement. The commission further explained the reasoning behind not being able to place the requested sign. The commission did suggest, however, utilizing Agenda Item 4: Livonia Hills Estates, section 6. Residents Carol Ann Strohmer and Barb Bauman came to the commission seeking information regarding the alignment of Meadowview Lane as it parallels Lujon Road (in Farmington Hills). They reported that this has been the scene of a few traffic collisions recently and had concerns about why the road was designed in such a way. They were also concerned about a ditch close to their neighborhood that was adopted by the Finnish Center to clean and maintain. The commission agreed to direct those questions to the City Engineer. Agenda Item 5: University Park Drive Speed limit sign, section 7. Resident Denise Berthlaune, lives in the condos at the end of University Park Drive and came to the commission to point out a speed limit sign was not present on University Park Drive, traveling from Laurel Park Drive. She noted there is a lot of foot traffic from walkers in the area. Noting there was not a sign present. A motion was made by Commissioner Katers to erect (R 2-1) sign on University Park Drive going north from Laurel Park Drive. With support from Commissioner Draper, it was approved by unanimous vote that: 17-239 RESOLVED, a imit sign (R2-1) be placed on University Park Drive going north from Laurel Park Drive. Roundtable Discussion: Sgt. Leigh commented that the Plymouth Road construction project is underway and officers have increased enforcement in the surrounding neighborhoods affected by the project to target speeders. An email request was received Street, section 6, by moving it before the intersection of Bethany and Northland streets. In its current form it appears after the intersection and is difficult to see. A motion was made by support from Commissioner St. John, it was approved by unanimous vote that: 17-n Northland near Bethany Street be removed and relocated to appear before the Bethany and Northland intersection.
