MINUTES OF THE 727 REGULAR MEETING
LIVONIA TRAFFIC COMMISSION

The 727 Regular meeting of the Livonia Traffic Commission was held in the third-floor
conference room at City Hall on Thursday, November 10, 2016; it was called to order by
Chairperson Jim Policelli at 7:30 p.m.
PRESENT: Commissioners: Jim Policelli, Gordon Draper, John Katers, Gordon St. John,
Rebekah Farabaugh, Jim Keller; and Livonia Police Sergeant Brian Leigh.
VISITORS: Jill Gorman, James Sherlund, and Richard McLain.
Agenda Item 1: The minutes of the October 13, 2016, meeting were reviewed.
Commissioner Draper offered a motion to approve minutes as written and with support from
Commissioner Farabaugh, it was approved by unanimous vote that:
16-230 RESOLVED, the minutes of the October 13, 2016, meeting are approved as
written.
Agenda Item 2: Handicapped Sign Request from Jacquelyn Street, section 24.
Jill Gorman is a resident on Jacquelyn Street and she has a handicapped relative that resides with
her and is requesting a handicapped sign. The commission suggested two handicapped signs, the
first being placed close to the Middle Belt intersection and the other being placed close to the
Garden Street intersection (both signs will be on Jacquelyn). Therefore, a motion was made by
Commissioner Katers and with support from Commissioner Draper, it was approved by
unanimous vote that:
16-231 RESOLVED, for placement of two (2) W 11-9 Handicapped signs on
Jacquelyn Street; one close to Middle Belt intersection and the remaining sign close
to the Garden Street intersection.
Agenda Item 3: Parking issue along Surrey Street, section 16. Resident James Sherlund is
concerned about overflow parking from nearby businesses along the Five Mile corridor. In some
cases the parking is for a period longer than eight hours. The commission reminded him it is a
public street and vehicles are allowed to park, but also understands it’s unpleasant. The
Commission suggested talking to the business owners and asking them to park elsewhere.
Agenda Item 4: Old Rosedale Gardens Homeowners’ Association, section 34. President
Richard McLain spoke to the commission regarding some concerns about traffic during the
school hours at St. Michael School. Chief concerns were speeding, parking in residents’
driveways, and failure to stop for school bus loading/unloading. Since the school is located on
private property the commission has no jurisdiction; however, further communications from the
H.O.A to the school staff could benefit everyone.
Roundtable Discussion: E-mail communications. A resident along Grandon Street, section 35,
notified the police department about vehicles parked in the newly designated “No Parking during
School Hours” areas. Sgt. Leigh commented that a few citations were issued. Commissioner
Farabaugh commented that all of the residents are extremely pleased with the new zone.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:38 p.m.
