The Chairman stated that the meeting was called for purpose of acting on a written request dated January 18, 1968 from James McCarthy, a candidate at the Primary Election of February 19 , 1968 After careful review and consideration of the request and the applicable statutes it appears that the primary concern of the commission should be that the electorate should be fairly apprised of the identity of those whose names appear before it. It would appear that James McCarthy, having registered as such, and whose Nominating Petition appears as James McCarthy, would best be known to the community by his name James McCarthy, and based on this information it would further appear that Mr McCarthy would best be identified by his duly registered name and as it appears on said petition. Commissioner Moelke stated, "it is my understanding that there is a radio personality, well known, that uses the ititials "J P " , which radio station broadcasts within a hearing radius of this area, and it may indeed cause confusion to the voters Therefore, as a member of the Election Commission I feel it is my responsibility to make sure the voters know who they are voting for It should also be a matter of record of this commission that this same James McCarthy has twice run for office in the City of Livonia as James McCarthy and should therefore appear at this time as James McCarthy as he is best known and should be identified on the ballot as such " On a motion by Commissioner Polgar, seconded by Commissioner Moelke, it was RESOLVED, that after careful review and consideration of the request and the applicable statutes , it appears that the primary concern of the Commission should be that the electorate should be fairly apprised of the identity of those whose names appear before it It would appear that James McCarthy, having registered as such, and whose nominating petition appears as James McCarthy, would best be known by his name James McCarthy, and based on this information it would further appear that Mr McCarthy would best be identified by his duly registered name and as it appears on said petition AYES.
