HomeMy WebLinkAboutBOARD OF CANVASSERS 1958-02-22 ADJOURNED Page 3272 MINUTES OF ADJOURNED MEETING OF THE BOARD OF CANVASSERS OF THE CITY OF LIVONIA The above meeting was held at the Livonia City Hall, 33001 Five Mile Road, at approximately 10:00 A. M., February 22, 1958. Present-- Austin T.Grant, Frank O'Neill, Sydney B. Bagnall, Rudolf R. Kleinert, David L. Jones and John T. Daugherty. Absent-- Peter A. Ventura. By Councilman Daugherty, seconded by Councilman Bagnall, it was resolved that WHEREAS, in the Primary election held Monday, February 17, 1958, machine No. 21225 used in Precinct No. 16 did indicate a 256 total number of votes for Municipal Judge, although the aggregate total of votes for the six candidates for this office should have totaled only 99; and WHEREAS, the City Council, as a Board of Canvassers in compliance with Section 12 of Chapter III of the Charter, did canvass the results of the said Primary election on February 20, 1958, and did recess a special meeting with the City Clerk, City Attorney, Election Board workers of the precinct affected and election custodians and did examine at said adjourned meeting held on Saturday, February 22, 1958, Shoup Voting Machine No. 21225 in com- pliance with Michigan Statutes in the following manner: Councilmen Grant, O'Neill, Daugherty, Jones, Bagnall and Kleinert, as the Board of Canvassers, examined the same as follows: 1. Did determine that the number of the seal on s aid voting machine No. 21225 was unbroken and that its number was 1297. 2. Did determine that the number on the protective counter of said machine was 01515. 3. Did open the counter compartment of said machine, and with- out unlocking the machine, recanvassed the votes cast thereon and found the total votes cast to be 256. 4. The machine was then cleared to read zero on the open counter compartment for all elective offices. 5. After the clearance, the number on the protective counter showed as 01519. 6. This was verified by the Board of Canvassers, Inspectors of Election and ail others present. 7. The counters were then worked one hundred timed for each elective office voted on during said primary election. The result of the operation of said machine is reflected in the statement of the City Clerk which is incorporated herein as follows: Page 3273 STA..EMENT OF THE CITY CLERK Voting Machine No. 21225 of the City of Livonia having been examined on February 22, 1958, at the request of the Board of Canvassers of the City, dated February 21, 1958; and said examination of said machine having been conducted in accordance with Section 792 of the Michigan Election Law; the results of said re- canvass and examination are as follows: 1. Number of Seal 1297 2. Number on Protective Counter 01515 3. Open Counter Compartment shows total votes cast as 99 L . After clearance, number on Protective Counter shows 01519 The machine was then cleared to read zero on the open counter compartment and all elective offices. This was verified by the Board of Canvassers and the In- spectors of Election of said precinct. The counters were then worked 100 times for each elective office voted on during the City Primary Election held on Monday, Febru- ary 17, 1958; the results are as follows: MAYOR: William W. Page 3274 This Board of Carnrassers after consideration and examination of the above procedures, and the City Clerk's report, does conclude that a human error was made in the initial zeroing of machine No. 21225 to the extent of 58 votes being registered on the machine prior to opening of the poles; and WHEREAS, this error does not. affect the nomination of candidates for this office of Municipal Judge in any position; and it further appearing that no candidate was prejudiced thereby and that said error was harmless; the aggregate total of s aid votes cast on said machine by the Board of Can- vassers showing a total of 600 votes to be cast, which equals the 100 votes cast by the canvassers for each elective office in said Primary; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, the following statement of votes cast in the City Primary Election held on February 17s 1958: THE WHOLE NUM3ER OF VOTES CAST WITHIN THE CITY OF LIVONIA WAS FIVE T IOUSAND NINE HUNDRED SEVENTY FIVE 5,975 THE WHOLE NUMBER OF V(YP ,S CAST FOR THE OFFICE OF MAYOR OF TIE CITY OF LIVONIA WAS FIVE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED EIGHTY FOUR 5,884 AND THEY WERE GIVEN FOR THE FOLLOWING NAND PERSONS: WILLIAM W.
