HomeMy WebLinkAboutBOARD OF CANVASSERS 1968-02-23 MINUTES OF MEETING OF BOARD OF CANVASSERS OF THE CITY OF LIVONIA Pursuant to Act No 116 of the Public Acts of 1954, State of Michigan, as amended, the members of the Board of Canvassers of the City of Livonia met on Friday, February 23, 1968 at approximately 7 30 P M. at the City Hall, 33001 Five Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan. The meeting was called to order at the above time and place by the City Clerk, Addison W Bacon, acting as Secretary to the Board . Roll was called with the following result Present -- Leonard J. Hippler, Allen J. Kovinsky, David Merrion, and Sidney Diamond. Absent -- None. The secretary brought to the attention of the members an agreement of the Board at their meeting of February 20, 1964, that the office of Chairman would be rotated between the political parties on a yearly term Chairman Kovinsky called for nominations for Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. Hippler, supported by Mr. Diamond, moved the nomination of Mr. Merrion as Chairman representing the Republican Party There being no further nomina- tions offered, the Chairman declared nominations for the office closed and thereupon Mr. Merrion was unanimously elected as Chairman Assuming the chair, Mr. Merrion called for nominations for the office of Vice-Chairman Mr. Kovinsky, supported by Mr. Hippler, moved the nomination of Mr. Diamond as Vice-Chairman representing the Democratic Party. There being no further nominations offered, the Chairman declared nominations closed and thereupon Mr. Kovinsky was unanimously elected as Vice-Chairman. The Secretary informed the Board of the City Councilors action of establishing compensation for the Members of the Board of Canvassers at a Regular Meeting of January 31, 1968, and read the following resolution #97-68 RESOLVED, that the Council does hereby determine to establish the rate of compensation at the rate of $25.00 per meeting per member of the City of Livonia Board of Canvassers, further, the Council does hereby transfer the sum of $200 00 from the Reserve for Contingencies Account to the Election Couuiiission Salaries Account #152-1 for this purpose Each member acknowledged the availability of compensation and indicated they would accept such compensation for their labors. The City Clerk made available to the Board the Certified Statement of Returns of the forty-four (44) election precincts of the City as prepared and certified by the respective election boards of each precinct and filed in the City Clerk' s office These returns were examined and canvassed by the Board, and were approved. By Mr. Kovinsky, supported by Mr. Hippler, and unanimously carried, it was RESOLVED, that the following statement of votes cast in the City Primary Election held on Monday, February 19, 1968 THE WHOLE NUMBER OF VOTES CAST WITHIN THE CITY OF LIVONIA WAS 13,516 THIRTEEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED SIXTEEN (LESS FOUR SPOILED (4) BALLOTS) FOR A TOTAL OF THIRTEEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED TWELVE 13,512 THE WHOLE NUMBER OF VOTES CAST FOR THE OFFICE OF MAYOR OF THE CITY OF LIVONIA WAS THIRTEEN THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED FORTY 13,440 and THEY WERE GIVEN FOR THE FOLLOWING NAMED PERSONS GEORGE L. KINDRED RECEIVED ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED EIGHTY SIX 1,286 HARVEY W. MOELKE RECEIVED SIX THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED NINETY 6,690 JACK SALVADORE RECEIVED ONE THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED TWENTY NINE 1,929 PETER A.
